Instructions for Ralston Valley Choir auditions

All phases of the audition process may be recorded by audio and/or video

Sight Singing:

Rhythmic Reading:

  • Rhythmic reading will consist of a moderately easy four measure line of rhythm

  • Patterns used may include: Half, Quarter, Eighth, Sixteenth, Dotted Quarter, Dotted Eighth, Eighth Note Triplets

  • There will be no rests

  • Keep a slow steady beat (one beat per second is an ideal tempo Relax and show us what you know

Tonal Memory:

  • Tonal Memory will consist of eight short (four or five note) patterns played one at a time on the piano.

  • The singer will sing them back on a neutral syllable such as ‘dah’ or ‘lah’.

  • These patterns can only be played once for the sake of fairness

Bach Chorale:

  • Each student auditioning will learn their part to the selected Bach chorale

  • The audition will be done with the SATB recording played, while the singer sings their part

  • Sing confidently and strongly Stay with the tempo of the recording

  • Relax and show us how well you sing in tune with the recorded singers
